Start a Technical Conversation

The Engineering Discussion Can Now Become Specific

The engineering situations described throughout this site can be understood in different ways.

Perhaps the plant is exhibiting behaviour that is not yet fully understood.

Perhaps the engineering problem is already known, and the challenge is to determine how it should be solved.

Or perhaps an important engineering decision requires an independent technical perspective.

In each case, the starting point is the same:

Understand the specific circumstances before deciding what should be done.

What Should You Bring to the Conversation?

You do not need to have a complete technical specification or a predefined solution.

The conversation can begin with what is currently known:

Starting Information
  • The plant or project involved
  • The operating behaviour or engineering issue that has been observed
  • What has already been investigated or decided
  • The technical question that remains unanswered
  • The engineering decision that is approaching

The available information may be incomplete.

That is acceptable.

The purpose of the initial conversation is to understand the situation of interest from the customer's point of view and determine what technical question should be addressed.

A useful technical conversation does not need to begin with a service name.

It begins by understanding the customer's point of view and mapping that view onto the engineering reality.
