Most industrial plants are designed to operate close to their technical and economic optimum. Yet, after years of operation, many gradually move away from that objective without anyone intentionally deciding to do so.
The plant remains stable. Production targets are achieved. Operators know how to run the process.
Everything appears to be working as expected.
So where is the problem?

The absence of alarms does not necessarily mean the absence of engineering opportunities.
Many operational limitations develop gradually over months or years. Because they rarely interrupt production, they slowly become accepted as part of normal operation.
Eventually, no one remembers whether those limitations are truly unavoidable—or simply the result of accumulated engineering compromises.

- operates reliably but rarely approaches its process constraints;
- depends on frequent operator intervention to maintain stability;
- achieves acceptable production while consuming more energy than expected;
- delivers less benefit from APC than originally anticipated;
